Defining Private Medical Insurance
While some individuals such as pregnant women, senior citizens, the disabled and children can receive public government healthcare the majority of adults carry private medical insurance. This simply means they are insured by a health insurance company and their medical expenses are not paid for by any government assistance programs. Private health insurance makes up the bulk of American health insurance coverage. However, this type of insurance is often far from perfect and there are issues that people suffer with regarding their policies.
For example, some self employed individuals find that carrying a private health insurance plan on themselves, not to mention their families, is very expensive. Of course the rate for insurance varies depending on a wide variety of factors. These factors include your age, health status and how much coverage you need. The price of your monthly premium will also depend on the deductible you choose. The higher the deductible, the lower the payment. However, if you end up with hefty medical bills you will find yourself paying that high deductible before coverage kicks in.
Employers often provide private health insurance as a group to their employees. Depending on who you work for, this might be paid for by your employer or offered to you as a benefit option for a certain amount of money deducted from your paycheck every payday. Some employers offer excellent health insurance benefits, while others do not. In some cases you would be better off getting your own individual policy. If you have insurance at work but can't afford the deductible, check into hospital and doctor financial assistance programs. These are programs sponsored by the facilities that reduce the cost of a patient's bill by a certain percentage, and sometimes they apply to the entire nuclear family.
Even with private medical insurance, Americans are often left holding big medical bills they have trouble paying. As mentioned above, many hospitals and doctor's offices have financial assistance for households that can help pay a portion of your bill depending on your income. Also, some allow you to make monthly installment payments on your bill rather than demanding it be paid all at once. So even if your private insurance isn't the greatest and you have unpaid medical bills, there are ways you can get help shouldering this burden.
